David Low Way, a 36-kilometre stretch of road on the Sunshine Coast, is a testament to the vision and determination of one man, David Allan Low. Born in Yandina in 1911, Low dedicated his life to serving his community, both as a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly and as Chairman of the Maroochy Shire Council.
Low’s most significant contribution was his advocacy for a coastal road connecting Maroochydore and Noosa. This ambitious project aimed to open up the coastline, stimulate tourism, and improve transportation for residents and businesses. Despite facing numerous challenges, Low’s persistence paid off. The first section of the road, between Sunshine Beach and Peregian Beach, was opened in 1960. Over the following years, the road was extended, eventually linking Caloundra to Noosa.
David Low Way has played a crucial role in the development of the Sunshine Coast. It has facilitated the growth of coastal towns, provided access to pristine beaches, and boosted the region’s economy.
